Gorse Conversion Fund

Contributing significant levels of nitrogen to ground water and ultimately our waterways, gorse is a harmful plant that offers no land productivity or environmental benefits.

To improve the water quality of Lake Rotorua, the Gorse Conversion Fund has been established to assist landowners in converting mature gorse to a low nitrogen leaching activity. 

 

About the Gorse Conversion Fund

The Gorse Conversion Fund can fund the conversion of mature gorse to productive forestry, native bush, or other low nitrogen leaching activities.

The funding can cover the initial gorse control, site preparation, fencing, planting, and weed and pest control up to $4,500 per hectare.

It can also fund up to $2,000 for independent advice, so you can be sure you are making the right decision for your property before signing any agreement.

About gorse

Gorse is a nitrogen fixing plant, meaning it extracts nitrogen from the air to help it grow. Research has shown that this process causes gorse to leach a significant level of nitrogen into the ground water, which then makes its way to the lake.

Too much nitrogen in the lake can cause algal blooms to grow, damaging the overall quality of water. 

Gorse can be difficult for landowners to eradicate. If left unmanaged after clearing, it will most likely grow back. The Gorse Conversion Fund is designed to help you eradicate mature gorse, once and for all. 

There is a significant amount of gorse in the Lake Rotorua catchment so Bay of Plenty Regional Council has a fund to remove 30 tonnes of nitrogen per year and help achieve the 270 tonne nitrogen reduction needed from rural lan.d
