Actions to improve water quality

The Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes Programme is leading the way in lakes water quality management. We have a range of innovative solutions to help protect and restore water quality.  Our Programme is supported by science and technology to develop our actions and approach.

Some of our actions have an immediate effect on water quality such as phosphorous locking and weed harvesting. These actions provide a short-term solution. As soon as we stop these interventions we risk allowing the water quality to decline again.

Long-term actions such as sewerage reticulation and land use and management change take time to have an effect on water quality, but provide long-term sustainable improvements.

We use a combination of short-term and long-term interventions so improvement to lakes water quality can be enjoyed now while the long-term actions have time to take effect.
