Tarawera Field Trip 2016

The story of Lake Tarawera - Field Trip was held on Friday 4th March to share the development and content of the Tarawera Lakes Restoration Plan. It was also an opportunity for the different groups to share their thoughts and perspectives.

Among the 40 attendees were residents from Lake Tarawera and Okareka, members of Ngati Rangitihi and Tuhourangi, farmers from the inner and outer lakes catchments affected by the plan, Lake Water Quality Society rep, Bay of Plenty Regional Council staff and Rotorua Lakes Council representatives.

The field trip began with a boat trip around Lake Tarawera. Ken Raureti shared stories of Ruawahia (Mount Tarawera) and the people from Rangitihi, Terry Beckett and Professor David Hamilton provided commentary on the science that feeds in to the plan and Regional Council Land Management Officer Richard Mallinson talked about some of the work completed to remove silver wattle. The day ended with a tour of John and Catherine Ford's farm at Highlands Station, and Shane Birchall (Waionehu Farm) and Barnett Vercoe (Onuku Maori lands Trust) sharing some of the environmental work they have implemented on their farms.
